  8. This program is shareware and may not be sold, or listed in any catalogue
  9. without consent of Alchemy Software Development, and then may only be sold
  10. for no more than a small disk-copying fee.  PD-NonStop and Fred Fish have
  11. full permission (And support) to include this program in their libraries.
  12. If you use this program regularly, a shareware registration fee of $15 is 
  13. required. Please think of registering your copy, as without support I will
  14. not continue updating/improving the program. When distributing The Disk Ute
  15. you MUST include this documentation.

  27. The Disk Ute is a multitasking copier/formatter written with ease of use
  28. and speed in mind. The program supports high density Amiga disks and works
  29. happily on an A4000/3000/1200/2000/600/500. It requires Workbench 2.0x 
  30. upwards.  It is easy enough to use that I will give only a brief explanation
  31. of the various functions.

  33. The Copier
  34. ----------
  35. This is accessed by clicking (or pressing 'c') from the main menu. You will
  36. be presented with a window showing the options. To do a copy, select your
  37. source and destination and click on 'Copy'. The program will then perform
  38. the copy and inform you when finished. If you select the same source and
  39. destination you will be asked to insert a disk after it reads the source.
  40. Since the program reads the whole disk into memory you will need about a
  41. megabyte of memory free for drive-to-same-drive copy. This will be remedied
  42. soon.

  44. The Disk Ute automatically recognizes whether the disk is high-density or
  45. low-density and will not allow you to mix types.
  46. The program will show you what track it is processing. Note that this is
  47. the TRACK number, not the cylinder number (which goes from 0-79 on standard
  48. disks). The two grids on the right show the upper and lower heads of the
  49. current track. When the disk is alright you will see a white rectangle for
  50. a read and a black rectangle for a write. But when there is an error you
  51. will see a number or letter in the grid corresponding to the track. The
  52. error codes are:
  53.  
  54.         0 - No error
  55.         1 - Could not find sector header
  56.         2 - Error in sector preamble
  57.         3 - Error in sector identifier
  58.         4 - Header field has bad checksum
  59.         5 - Sector data field has bad checksum
  60.         6 - Incorrect number of sectors on track
  61.         7 - Unable to read sector header
  62.         8 - Disk is write-protected
  63.         9 - Disk has been changed or is not present
  64.         A - While verifying seek position, found seek error
  65.         B - Not enough memory
  66.         C - Bad unit number
  67.         D - Bad drive type
  68.         E - Drive already in use
  69.         F - User hit reset
  70.         G - Error could not be determined
  71.         ! - Something seriously wrong

  73. You will not see most of these, but they are included. Note also that The
  74. Disk Ute will only work reliably on normal Amiga disks (DOS, demo disks,
  75. most games, etc) but NOT on IBM formatted disks and other wierd thingies.
  76. Future versions will copy these but not for the moment.

  78. You are also able to specify the start and end tracks of a copy. This can
  79. be used if you are low on memory.

  81. Disk checks can be performed by clicking 'Check Disk'. This will read the
  82. disk selected from the source and see if there is any errors on it. The
  83. error codes are the same as those above.

  85. The 'Default' gadget just sets the start and end tracks to 0 and 159
  86. respectively.

  88. During a copy you can hit cancel to stop.

  90. Return brings you back to the main menu.

  93. The Formatter
  94. -------------
  95. This formats high and low density Amiga disks. It will only allow you to
  96. format a disk to the proper type (i.e. you can't format a HD disk as a low
  97. density disk). I do this because as well as stuffing up disks, I don't want
  98. to be responsible for loss of data. The checkbox options are:
  99.     
  100. OFS:
  101. Will format the disk Old File Sytem (the default is FFS)
  102.  
  103. International:
  104. Will maintain international characters in filenames
  105.  
  106. Verify:
  107. This will verify the format. If an error is found the format will stop. Try
  108. the format again or use another disk. This slows down the format.
  109.  
  110. Quick Format will only work properly on already formatted disks. It erases
  111. everything on the disk and renames it.
  112. You can enter the name of the disk in the name gadget. Do not include ':'
  113. because you will find it hard to access the disk.

  116. Drive Info
  117. ----------
  118. This will tell you about your drive/disk. Really only used for debugging,
  119. but can be interesting. The difference between high/low density is the
  120. number of sectors per track. (11 for DD, 22 for HD)
